AxCrypt, built as a free and user-friendly open source, provides strong file encryption for files on Windows systems. It can be used directly from Windows Explorer so there is very little effort needed to encrypt, compress, decrypt a single or a group of files. With AxCrypt encrypting is made simple but there are also options to wipe, view and edit. The cryptographic systems are AES-128 and SHA-1.
It's easy to distinguish encrypted files as they have their name with ".axx" extension a new icon.
To encode a file, only must right-click in Windows Explorer, choose 'AxCrypt -> Encrypt' from menu and enter a pass phrase or the optional strong key file.
To decrypt, follow the same steps but choose 'Decrypt' and indicate correctly the password phrase and correct key.
If you want to edit and view an .axx file - only double-click it.
Using Encrypt Copy to .exe option it is also possible to create a self-decrypting .exe executable.
