Pidgin joins a bunch of messenger programs creating a multi-protocol instant messaging environment(multiple IM client) for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. Windows Live and Yahoo! messenger, AIM and ICQ (over Oscar protocol) and IRC, and others such as Jabber, Gadu-Gadu or SILC, GroupWise, and Zephyr networks.
Pidgin users have a single interface to log in to different accounts on different IM networks and access them at the same time. This means that the user may chat with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talk to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and discuss on IRC channel. Simultaneously.
Pidgin offers various functions found in these networks, like file transfer, away messages, notifications. There are also some innovative tools: Buddy Pounces, which can notify you, send a message, play a sound, or start an application if someone leave the network, signs online, or comes back from idle; A lot of plugins are available useful for text replacement or spell checking, buddy ticker, extend message notification, tabbed conversations, and so on.
