OpenOffice is an open-source freeware to replace almost the entire set of instruments from Microsoft Office: a similar to MS Word text processing and text editor, Excel-like spreadsheets, presentations similar to Powerpoint, graphics, databases similar to Access and the like. It is free and comes translated in various languages.
OpenOffice is reliable, consistent and its tools are fully interconnected. There are years of work behind, a single project and a large open community of developers that provide quality to this free office software.
It is so user-friendly, so that if you're already using a similar package then switching to Open Office can be made straight away.
Freeware in this case means the LGPL license - free to use for any domain or purpose: home, education, public administration or commercial.
What is inside the package:
Writer - A word processor similar to Microsoft Word. It has the capacity to convert or export files in Portable Document Format (PDF) files, and can also be used to make and edit web pages.
Calc - Spreadsheet program similar to Microsoft Excel and Lotus 1-2-3. Auto-defining series for graphing, export spreadsheets to PDF format.

Math - Equation Editor for making and editing mathematical formulae that may be embedded in OpenOffice documents.
