Trillian is made as a a complex, with simple interface chat client which bring together the power of IM programs like AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger or IRC. It brings some abilities not found in the network of IM clients he allows, along with standard tools e.g. audio chat, group chats and chat rooms, file transfers, buddy icons, parallel connections to the same network, server-side contact importing or typing notification
Among the other standard functions can be mentioned direct connection (AIM), proxy support, send encrypted messaging (AIM/ICQ), SMS sending, privacy options.
Among Trillian's exclusive options may be noted contact message history, the skinning language, set global status changes for all networks away at once, Instant Wikipedia Lookup, contact alerts, docking, shell extensions for performing file transfers. Multiple tabbed messaging, skins customization, lots of emoticons and emotisounds plus systray notifications.
